When summer arrives here in Huddersfield, I always feel that the town comes into its own. Our parks, reservoirs, canal paths and surrounding countryside give local families, walkers and groups of friends plenty of opportunities to enjoy the warmer weather without travelling far from home.
You do not need an expensive day out to make the most of summer around here. Sometimes all it takes is a picnic, a pair of comfortable trainers and a few hours set aside to enjoy the places we often take for granted ( I know I do).
Picnic Spots Close to Home
Greenhead Park and Beaumont Park remain two of Huddersfieldβs most popular places for a summer afternoon. Both offer plenty of room for families to gather, children to play and friends to sit together over food and conversation.
Beaumont Park has always felt particularly special to me. Its woodland paths, historic features and views make it feel removed from the town, despite being so close to home. Greenhead Park has a different atmosphere, with its wide lawns and central location making it an easy meeting point for people from across Huddersfield.
Those looking for something quieter can also find peaceful outdoor spaces around Fixby, Meltham and the villages surrounding the town. One of the best things about living here is that open countryside is never far away.
Walks for Every Ability
Huddersfield is also surrounded by walking routes suitable for almost every pace. There are gentle park paths for families, canal towpaths for relaxed weekend walks and more challenging countryside routes for those who want to spend several hours outdoors.
Blackmoorfoot Reservoir is a favourite destination for many local walkers, offering open views and a chance to enjoy the landscape away from busy roads. Marsden and Slaithwaite also provide beautiful routes through the Colne Valley, with waterside paths, hills and village scenery along the way.
For me, these walks are about more than exercise. They are an opportunity to slow down, notice the landscape and appreciate how quickly Huddersfield changes once you leave the town centre behind.
A Simple Huddersfield Summer Tradition
Huddersfield does not need a major festival or organised event every weekend to bring people together. Some of our best summer traditions are the spontaneous ones.
It might be deciding at the last minute to meet friends in the park, packing sandwiches for an afternoon by the reservoir or taking the family on a walk because the sun has finally appeared.
These are simple days out that I think should be enjoyed with family and friends. They cost very little, require almost no planning and remind us how fortunate we are to have so many green spaces on our doorstep.
Whether you are discovering a new walking route or returning to a park you have visited for years, summer is the perfect time to explore Huddersfield outdoors. Sometimes the best local experiences are the ones that have been waiting for us all along.
