Adelina Sewell, a Huddersfield-based author and theatre director, has released the first book in her young adult fantasy series, The Tale of Leosala. The series was born out of her personal journey living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a chronic and often invisible condition, and her recovery from multiple surgeries over the past decade.
During periods of rest and recovery, Adelina developed a magical universe as a way to escape difficult times. The story follows the character 'Addy', who battles a magical version of EDS called Wildthreads, using fire abilities and the support of friends and found family. Themes of friendship, adventure, and resilience run throughout the series, reflecting Adelina's own experience of managing a chronic illness while nurturing creativity and ambition.
After being bedbound for over a year due to two major surgeries this year, Adelina organised her ideas and sketches to finally publish the book. She hopes the story will offer comfort and inspiration to others facing similar challenges, showing that difficult periods do not have to limit creativity or dreams.
Since its release, The Tale of Leosala has sold over 35 copies in its first weeks, been entered into two writing competitions, and attracted followers and reviews from new readers. Adelina has also been featured on Examiner Live, highlighting her journey from creating a secret world in her imagination to sharing it with a growing audience.
